LET US KNOW HIM MORE
as he answers my questions & shares his experiences
and more from the Philippine Fashion World
1. When did you first become interested in fashion?
-I have always had an interest in fashion. But my passion for it developed even more when I started as an intern for Seventeen Magazine. That was when I knew I wanted to make a career out of it.
2. Was fashion your first love?
-I wouldn’t say so. I developed my passion for it as I went along. I initially wanted to pursue a career in medicine. I started out in DLSU with a degree in Biology.
3. What was your first job in fashion?
-I was an intern for Seventeen Magazine. My first paid job in fashion though was as an assistant style editor for Young Star.
4. Describe your typical day
-On a typical day, I wake up around 9 or 10 in the morning. I have a long routine of answering emails and reading magazines while having coffee so I don’t get to leave my flat until about noon. I head to work then and get home after dinner if there are no events or parties to attend.
5. What do you wear on set?
-I’m a uniform dresser. On a typical day and regardless of the season, I wear a black leather jacket over a black or blue shirt, Zadig and Voltaire trousers, and Balenciaga sneakers. Everyday. My closet is almost limited to black, blue, and gray.
6. How do you prepare for a photo shoot?
-I need time to think and research on a particular story. I usually dig up fashion history and try to incorporate what I learn into my concepts. I think this is the best way to come up with something modern and new. Then I decide on designers or brands that would best translate my concept. My assistants help me find the best jewelry, shoes, bags, hats, and other accessories needed and once we have gathered everything we need, I choose the right people who can best execute the vision. This includes the appropriate photographer, makeup artist, hairstylist, and model. Once we have all these together then my shoot happens. It is a long process that I love.
7. What is the role of Patrick Ty, Creative Director for Metro Magazine?
-In a nutshell, I am in charge of the artistic direction of the magazine. This includes formulating concepts, over all in charge of shoots, and curating all photos that are published in Metro.
8. Favorite Local/ International Designer
-Locally, I admire Joey Samson and Ivar Aseron. Probably half of my wardrobe are clothes made for me by Joey. On an international level, Nicolas Ghesquière, Riccardo Tisci, Miuccia Prada, John Galliano, and Kim Jones.
9. Favorite Brands
-I’m loyal to Prada, Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière only (it is a tragedy he has left Balenciaga), Givenchy, Dior, and Maison Kitsunè.
10. Style Icon
-There are a lot, though I do not just admire them for their taste in fashion. In my opinion, these people have impeccable taste in the way they live their lives. That includes everything from their manner of dressing to the quality of work they produce. These include Stefano Pilati, Hedi Slimane, Fabien Baron, Olivier Lalanne, and my favorite fashion figure, Carine Roitfeld.
11. Favorite covers you did?
-A few would include Mega Magazine September 2008 Anne Curtis, Mega Magazine May 2007 Lucy Torres-Gomez, Metro Magazine March 2012 Anne Curtis, and the cover coming out next month, Ruffa Gutierrez, Metro September 2013.
12. Who are the people you want to work with?
-I would choose Steven Meisel. He is my favorite photographer and it would be a dream to be able to work with him. His work inspires me.
13. If Grace Coddington invites you for a coffee, what will you say if she asks about Philippine Fashion?
-That contrary to what most people say and think, it exists and it is flourishing.
14. What can you say about counterpart creative Directors like Vince Uy & Suki Salvador?
-I think that in the grand scheme of things, we at Metro, along with our colleagues from Preview and other magazines, collectively help develop, promote, and uplift the standards of the Philippine fashion industry.
15. What advice would you give someone who wants to work in fashion?
-For someone who wants to work in publishing or fashion in general, I would advice him to work for a credible mentor, build a network of significant connections, and always look like you want to work in fashion. You have to mean it to be taken seriously.
